About this deal

To protect Annie, authorities decide to place her in a foster home and give her a new identity, ‘Milly’. Her reasoning of her current situation and past and the mental manoeuvres she undertakes to function and keep her mother’s voice at bay were interesting and, of course, you’re never entirely sure how much to trust her or her version of people or events. You are never sure if Milly is a reliable narrator, especially because she straight up admits she struggles with being good and bad. After graduating from university with a degree in mental health, Ali Land spent a decade working as a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nurse in hospitals and schools in the UK and Australia.

The style of writing lends itself well to the sharp pacey storyline and keeps you wondering what will happen next. I waited for you to sweep me up, rub our noses together in an Eskimo kiss and reply, you came for me, you belong with me, I love you. All the newspapers are covering her mother's story and Milly is desperate not to be like her mother and be good, but she is the daughter of a murderess.

Mike and his wife have a teenage daughter of their own, named Phoebe, who, unaware of Milly's past, is jealous of the time her father spends with Milly. I think the first half of the book was a little slower than the second half, hence the 4 star review. Unfortunately, I feel completely confused by my experience of this book, as my experience seems to have been somewhat different from most other reviewers. We learn how Annie’s mother abused and murdered young children in her ‘playground’, a hidden area of their house.

Now I know it's only just turned January, but I really do think this is going to be one of the big thrillers of 2017. I can appreciate how hard it would have been to get inside the head of such a troubled young girl but Land’s characterisation should be commended for its authenticity. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.Join now to access our Study Guides library, which offers chapter-by-chapter summaries and comprehensive analysis on more than 5,000 literary works from novels to nonfiction to poetry. All I'll say is if you enjoy reading psychological/suspense thrillers then you have to read this book.

We could really feel her struggling not to give in to the darker side as the voice of her mother in her head pushes her to that darker side.

There is a lot going on within this story and many topics touched on here that for us overshadowed the creepiness and distracted us from the struggles going on in Milly’s mind. While the mother of the house, Saskia, was clearly damaged and should never have been placed in charge of the care of a troubled teenager.

By selecting this method of narration to express the events of the story, it is a compelling choice that seems to work in well with the overall tone of the book itself. He has never worked with someone as damaged as Milly, but he is well placed to help her adjust to life without her mother, and he knows what warning signs to look for if she’s struggling. The first person narrative is captivating and unique, it allows for a short direct sentence structure and enables lengthy description to be abandoned and replaced by snappy impulsive griping words that delve deep in to Millie's mind. Though I finished this book before its publication on September 5, 2017, I just couldn’t decide how to sum up it up without spoilers while relating my enjoyment of this book. As her mother’s trial looms, the secrets of her past won’t let Annie sleep, even with a new foster family and name – Milly. Milly, on the other hand, proves to be adept at her own secret agenda, and as more time goes by, we see her behavior ratchet up to an extremely manipulative level as she hears her mother’s imaginary voice guiding her and reminding her that she has to make her own wishes come true.
