HS Series cabinets are designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. You have to learn the location of the on / off button to hit it without looking, and volume control is just a normal knob so it takes some effort to make both speakers equally loud, because you can't how it's set since it's hidden behind.Drawing from Yamaha's over 100 years of piano design experience, HS Series engineers also employed a traditional three-way mitered-joint technique. Conclusion: there must have been some sort of compatibility issue with my old E-MU sound card, as from the moment I installed Focusrite - no problems whatsover.
