Caught using forbidden magic, Emelin is captured by the Silent Death and brought to the Crimson Court, where she learns more about the Silent Death and bargains with him. But I would imagine that in later books I’m going to be happy to have the background information that the prequel provides.
it took me a few pages to really get into it, but once done , I couldn’t put my kindle down to save my life .And according to the residents of the Japanese island of Okinawa - the world's longest-living people - finding it is the key to a longer and more fulfilled life.

He’s the most powerful of his kind, and though he has that broody, cocky arrogance that I love so much in my romantic heroes, he’s also wonderfully witty and he has this quiet vulnerability about him that is absolutely irresistible. Emelin is very smart and determined and I love that she talks back, evil though he could kill her with his pinky.
It doesn’t take long for us to see a different side of him, firstly in sparing Emelin, and then when he sets her up in his home and she starts to snark at him, and he snarks right back. All these creatures: fae, demons, gods, alves, pheonixes, vampires and nymphs - with their own kind of magic. Emelin is so fierce and strong and Creon is just everything I want in a broody misunderstood dark fae! When Lyn and Tared reveal to Em that Creon might very well have been using his demon magic to manipulate her into falling in love with him, Creon and Em fight, and Em recklessly goes off into the Labyrinth alone.
He needs her assistance for this as he is bound by his mother and he needs someone with unbound magic. Beautifully complex and very much morally grey - if only his character was given more time to open up. There are plenty of interesting side characters introduced and brought back from HoSaS (with some notable absences 👀), and I enjoyed that Emelin gets plenty of time with them as well as with Creon, so the storyline never feels taken over by the romantic element. En evil Queen , well developed supporting characters that stand out despite their brief appearance and of course a fast paced enemies to lovers plot with plenty of intrigue , Fae court machinations with twists and turns . They don’t hide from each other, they tease and they flirt, and every moment between them feels like it’s dripping with anticipation. At this stage, you don’t have to read it first, this book is a very strong series starter, with more extensive world-building than the prequel.The story starts in Cathra, a human island that has recently installed an iron ward and believes itself to be freed of the Fae dominion. They played off each other very well, and their development was kept believable yet completely swoon-worthy! The book’s timeline is actually pretty fast moving, but the romance feels like a slow burn, and I was revelling in every little moment between these two. This isn’t even the first book that’s followed a similar format, it’s just one of the few I’ve overlooked in favour of curiosity.
