There are a lot more opportunities for deception here as well. It does take a bit of getting used to managing two different clues and making sure you don’t accidentally mess up your colors, but it’s not too difficult.

Possible Clues

Because that’s the twist: like any self-respecting pirate captain and his precious treasure map, all the information in Cryptid has been torn into pieces and scattered to the winds, and each player has a piece of that picture. So the game becomes an exercise in interrogation and deduction as you piece together the other players’ non-answers to try and paint a picture of where your beloved Bigfoot might be hiding.

Each player has their own set of cubes and discs, which they will place on the board when they are forced to give the other players information. A cube means that space cannot be the creature's habitat, according to that player's clue. The game is a competitive puzzle. It’s a race to find out the solution, but a race where your opponents’ progress is at best translucent. You can sort of tell how much they know about each clue from where and who they’re questioning. You never know what they’ve figured out and a lot of the time it’s that one bit of extra information that can give you an “aha!” moment that lets you solve the whole thing. Players must be honest when placing game pieces onto the map. At no point may pieces be removed from the board. Players are not permitted to search or question any space that has a cube on it. One space cannot hold multiple pieces from the same person. END OF GAME The habitat is within two spaces of an animal territory of the specified type (either bear or cougar). This includes spaces containing the specified type of animal territory. For this clue, only the specified type counts. The player you questioned must say whether the space could be the habitat according to their clue, and places either a disc or a cube of their color on the selected space, to indicate whether the creature could be there or not.

I look up from my explanation and see everyone is hanging on my every word. So I sigh, knowing I'm about to puncture a bubble, and explain we never actually know what the creature is. It's a deduction game. Each turn, a player asks a question of another player. In answer, they place a disc or cube to show whether that hex could, or could not, be the creature's habitat according to their clue.
